World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year across the world from August 1 — August 7. This global campaign aims to raise awareness about the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies and mothers.
In observance of World Breastfeeding Week, a women’s fellowship team in Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Mumbai organized awareness programs at two places.
The team taught women on how breastfeeding is beneficial to children and how it protects them against many common childhood illnesses. They explained about what to expect on the first two days of breastfeeding and issues related to milk supply and breastfeeding positions. They emphasized how simple steps such as providing emotional support improve initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth, and spoke on other topics such as exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and complementary feeding thereafter.
An awareness video on the importance of breastfeeding also was shown to women in a slum.
