A BioSand water filter distribution was held in Senapati district, Manipur on 6th September 2010.
The village where the distribution was held is in a hilly area with a population of about 200 people. This village is inhabited mainly by people of the Kuki tribe. Most of them are farmers and their living conditions are poor. The Believers Church worker in the area saw the need for clean drinking water, and arranged to have free biosand water filters distributed.
On 6th September, Rev. Fr. Thanboi and some Believers Church office staff went along with the local BioSand coordinator to Gamnomphai to distribute 23 water filters free of cost. Honorable MLA, Thangminlen Kipgen, was the special guest of the program and was requested to distribute the filters to the people.
The villagers conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Believers Church for its great concern. Before, they had to constantly collect firewood to boil water for safe drinking. Some of the village elders said that due to the water filters they no longer have to boil water, which enables them to save firewood for cooking.
The women are very glad, saying, “Now we are no longer worried whether the firewood that we gather from the forest will last throughout the week or not. It is such a relief for us. We are able to drink the water without boiling it now, and that makes our workload a lot lighter.”
Believers Church has distributed thousands of BioSand water filters throughout South Asia. The filters contribute to the health of entire communities and improve the lifestyle of the poor and suffering.
