Believers Church Uttarakhand constructed 20 sanitation facilities for poverty-stricken families in April 2013. Previously, it was very difficult for women and elderly people to relieve themselves in the open. They especially suffered during the monsoon season as the whole area was filled with water.
“The main cause of not having toilet seat in home was finance,” said local people. They were aware of the environmental issues surrounding open defecation, and knew the importance of having toilets. But they could not afford to change things.
“I have been trying to build a toilet,” said a villager named Gulab, “but due to lack of finance I could not make it. I thank the church for this facility. My wife is very much happy after seeing the toilet in our field.”
Another woman, Kiran, said, “I have a grown up girl who was shy to go in open area, but what to do? Being poor, we were not able to build a toilet for our girls. But now we are happy that we can use the new toilet at any time.”
This is just one example of how Believers Church brings dignity and hygiene to a village through constructing toilets.
