On 27th October 2011 at around 12:00 am, the remote village of Nonglai in Tinsukia Diocese was hit by a cyclone. More than 3,000 people live here. The cyclone wiped away bamboo houses and even damaged concrete buildings. Hundreds of people lost their homes. Villagers’ belongings, including food, were swept away.
The Nonglai villagers work in a tea garden and live on daily wages. Most are poor and not very educated. They belong to many different communities like Nepali, Bangali, Bihari, Assamese, Adiwasi and Mising.
Believers Church leaders and Clergy in the locality were the ones to bring relief to the community after the disaster. Rev.Fr.Peter, Rev. Fr.Ruben, Rev. Fr.Monhem, Rev. Fr.Alfed and Rev. Fr.Theopil helped the cyclone victims to rebuild their homes and provided their basic needs for survival. All the villagers were grateful to Believers Church. They said, “There are many whom we were hoping would come and help that did not come.” But Believers Church was there for them in their time of need.
