In the beginning of January 2013, Uttarakhand recorded subzero temperatures in several districts in the high mountains. Even in Dehradun, it was -0.5 degree Celsius—the coldest temperature in 67 years. Several died from exposure.
Seeing the people’s suffering, Believers Church Uttarakhand distributed blankets on the cold nights of 5th and 6th January. The blankets went to people living on the roadside, under bridges, in railways stations and slums and outside temples. The homeless were lying on the ground in the cold and their children lacked warm clothes. Some were so desperate they ran after the distribution team asking for blankets.
“It has been severe cold,” said a recipient named Meena, “but no one came to even see us. But you people came in the night. I really thank you.”
An old man said, “Due to cold I was not getting proper sleep, but thank you for providing a blanket. At least I may get good sleep.”
Believers Church distributed blankets throughout North India during January’s cold snap.
