The medical team from Believers Church Medical College Hospital has been at the forefront of disaster response efforts in Wayanad, braving rough terrain and inclement weather conditions.
Today, with the help of forest officers, the team traveled 9 kilometers through dense forest to reach injured and infected patients in the isolated hamlet of Attamala, Erattukundu. They provided first aid and transported the injured to the designated care center in Chooralmala.
Local Believers Eastern Church parishes and the Hope of Children Center are also actively involved, assisting hundreds of people living in various camps in Wayanad. The teams visited these camps, providing essential daily necessities such as food, nutrients, sanitizers, hand wash, and soaps to the victims.
Here are some of the heart-wrenching stories from the survivors:
Saraswathy from Mundakkai Village: “I heard a big sound from the hillside while sleeping at night. Suddenly, I called my husband, and we carried our two kids and ran to a nearby hillside, where we stayed the whole night under the rain. The next morning, we discovered that our village had been washed away and most of the villagers were missing.”
Raju from Chooralmala: “Before the incident, we decided to go to my wife’s house for a special program. We participated in the event and stayed there that night. Early the next morning, we heard about a massive landslide. When I reached Chooranmala, I was devastated to see that our house and the entire village were washed away, and many villagers were missing. We lost everything.”
Lakshmi from Vallaarmala: “In the middle of the night, I heard a huge sound. I opened the door and saw heavy rain with a storm. I immediately took my two children and ran to the forest area, where we encountered an elephant standing just in front of us. We didn’t know what would happen next. We ran to the hilltop of the tea estate. Early in the morning, the rescue team arrived and took us to the relief camp.”
Muhammad from Chooralmala: “I work near a tea estate. Our daughter’s marriage was fixed for next month, and we had purchased her gown and dresses for everyone. But we lost everything. Fortunately, we reached the camp safely, but now we have nothing.”
Shakeela from Chaliyaar: “I lost my parents and two brothers. I am in a painful situation. I was injured and taken to the hospital. I was trapped under the debris and shouted for help. The rescue team rescued me immediately.”
Naagaveny from Munddakkai: “I am from Tamil Nadu and came here for daily wage work near the tea estate. I stayed in the estate quarters. At midnight, I heard a dog barking. I came out and saw that the flood had reached the estate quarters. I shouted a lot, but no one was there to help. I ran out and escaped from the flood. Later, I found out that most of the people who stayed there had already escaped. Now, I am undergoing treatment at the hospital.”
