Believers Eastern Church faithful celebrated Maundy Thursday with great solemnity on 14 April 2022, commemorating the event of the Lord Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and the institution of the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the last supper.
The word Maundy comes from the latin, ‘mandatum’, or ‘command’ which refers to the instructions Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper.
Believers Eastern Church parishes observed this day with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and feet-washing ceremony.
The Holy Thursday service at St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church Cathedral was presided over by Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan and co-celebrated by HG Joshua Mor Barnabas Episcopa. During the service, they ceremonially washed the feet of 12 people in memory of Christ’s washing the feet of His disciples.
In his homily, Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan explained the significance of why the Lord Jesus gave us the Sacrament of the Eucharist during His last final hours on earth. He ended the homily with a reminder that the Sacraments are given to us so that our lives will themselves become a living sacrament of worship to God and a blessing to our fellowmen.
HG Daniel Mor Timotheos Episcopa officiated the Holy Thursday liturgy at St. Peter’s Church at US. He washed the feet of the faithful, recalling Jesus Christ washing the feet of his 12 disciples during the last supper.
