The St. Thomas Community along with the Holy Synod held a special memorial function at 5 pm this evening at the Believers Convention Centre in the Church’s global headquarters to honor the memory of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory on the occasion of the 40th day since his repose.
The meeting began with the audience rising up to sing the national anthem, after which H.G. Daniel Mor Timotheus Episcopa of North America and Europe prayed for the blessings of the Holy Trinity upon the service.
The chief guest of the function was His Excellency Shri Vinay Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi who gave the inaugural address. As the Church PRO and Spokesman Fr. Sijo Pandapallil had explained earlier, His Excellency was the last dignitary who had shared the stage with Metropolitan Yohan during his last public function at the BCMCH hospital. His Excellency acknowledged the same and spoke of how much he respected the late Metropolitan, also assuring the Church that he would always be available as a friend to help in whatever way he could.
The Presidential address was warmly delivered by Sreemati Veena George, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare for the state of Kerala. She mentioned the numerous contributions of the reposed Metropolitan Yohan in the health and education sectors, also noting his many endeavors that were aimed at the upliftment and empowerment of women. The occasion was also graced by bishops from various churches who offered tributes to the late Metropolitan’s memory: Bishop Dr. George Eapen (St. Thomas Evangelical Church of India Fellowship), Rt. Rev. V.S. Francis (CSI East Kerala Diocese), H.G. Geevarghese Mor Coorliose Metropolitan (Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church), H.G. Mathews Mar Seraphim Episcopa (Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church), H.E. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios Metropolitan (Syro-Malankara Catholic Church), H.G. Kuriakose Mor Severios Metropolitan (Knanaya Syrian Archdiocese) and H.G Cyril Mar Baselios I Metropolitan (The Malabar Independent Syrian Church).
The Hon. Anto Antony (Member of Parliament, Pathanamthitta constituency), and MLA Shri Mathew T. Thomas (Thiruvalla Constituency) also spoke about the impact of the reposed Metropolitan’s life and work in their constituencies. Prof. P.J. Kurien (Former Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha) reflected on his decades-long friendship with the Metropolitan and outlined his numerous contributions for the welfare of the poor and the marginalized, recognizing him as a builder of the Indian nation.
The National Award winner and film director Blessy Ipe Thomas also gave heartfelt message about the Metropolitan and his enduring legacy. The famous musician Stephen Devassy made the occasion special with a beautiful musical tribute on the keyboard.
The Metropolitan Locum Tenens HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa offered tribute to Metropolitan Yohan on behalf of the Holy Synod whose member bishops were also in attendance.
The service ended with a vote of thanks by the Secretary General Fr. Dr. Daniel Johnson, followed by audience standing to sing the Indian national anthem.

On the occasion of the 40th day memorial for Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory, there was a special service held in conjunction with the Divine Liturgy this morning at the St. Thomas Cathedral in the church’s global headquarters in Thiruvalla. The chief celebrant was the Metropolitan Locum Tenens HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa, with the other members of the Holy Synod serving as co-celebrants. HG Justin Mor Thomas Episcopa of Dhaka delivered a homily that emphasized the importance of sharing the Gospel to those who have not heard it. His Grace reminded everyone of how the assigned lectionary topic had been the main emphasis of the late Metropolitan’s life and service, and encouraged the congregation to follow in his example. All the faithful of the St. Thomas Cathedral and its mission parishes then joined together in praying for the soul of the reposed Metropolitan, after which special incense prayers were offered at his gravesite.

A solemn public condolence meeting was held in honor of Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan of blessed memory on 15 June in the Diocese of Chennai to remember his life, accomplishments, and contributions to the Church and society. Over 200 people, including secular and political figures and religious leaders, were present on the occasion. Notable attendees included Mr. K. N. Chinnaiya (MLA & former Minister), Mrs. Swarswathi Manohar (Kontrathur Union President), Mr. Ashokan (Inspector of Police, Manimangalam), Rev. Y. Deva Kumar (CSI Priest), Adv. Raja Samuel (Legal Ethics Committee Padappai), Mr. N. Kumar (Vellore PMK Secretary), and Mr. Ashok (ADMK Councilor, Tambaram). These leaders shared their heartfelt condolences and reflected on the impactful service of His Holiness Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan.
The faithful and clergy of the Hubli Diocese organized a memorial public meeting in honor of Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan of blessed memory on June 14, 2024, in Jamkhandi, part of the Vijaypur Mission Province. More than 200 faithful, clergy, and community members gathered for the memorial meeting.
Other church leaders, namely Rev. Thukaram and Rev. Parusuram, and prominent personalities such as Shri Yamunappa Gundhal (Chairman, Dalit Sangharsh Samithi), Shri Javed Aalbu (Senior Congress Leader), Shri Yeswant Kalouthi (Journalist, NEWS 14), and panchayat members were part of this memorial meeting.
Shri Yamunappa Gundhal, expressing his appreciation for the contributions of the reposed Metropolitan, urged the Central and State Governments to honor his legacy by incorporating a chapter about him in school textbooks and establishing a research center in his memory.

The members of the Holy Synod and the St. Thomas Community will be observing the main memorial service at the Believers Convention Centre in the global headquarters of the Church in Thiruvalla, Kerala, at 5 pm. They expressed their condolences at the repose of the Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory to the Locum Tenens HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa. They also visited the Metropolitan’s burial site and offered prayers for his departed soul.

Oommen Chandy (former Chief Minister of Kerala), visited our Church’s global headquarters at Thiruvalla and expressed her condolences at the repose of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory to the members of the Holy Synod. Hank Hanegraaff, an orthodox Christian apologist, author, the host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast and the 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘜𝘯𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘥 podcast, and President of the Christian Research Institute (CRI). In both his letter and latest podcast, he celebrates the memory of our Metropolitan Yohan of blessed memory, calling him our generation’s most significant Christian leader.
Last week, our Believers Eastern Church Football Club (comprised of youth from our Kathmandu Archdiocese) qualified for the final match in the football tournament organized by the Nepal Sports Fellowship.
In recognition of our mourning period, the whole crowd – organizers, church members, players, fans etc., – expressed their solidarity with our church members and observed a moment of silence in honor of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory.
After offering their prayers for our late spiritual father’s soul, our diocesan team performed well in the finals, securing the first runner-up position in the tournament. They then dedicated all the trophies, shields and medals that they received to the memory of the reposed Metropolitan Yohan.
A memorial service for the Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory was held under the auspices of the Kerala Council of Churches (KCC) in the Believers Youth Center. The Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri P. S. Sreedharan Pillai was the chief guest who inaugurated the meeting, which was chaired by the KCC President HG Alexios Mar Eusebius Metropolitan of Calcutta (Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church). Metropolitan Locum Tenens HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus, HG Daniel Mor Timotheos of North America & Europe, HE Mor Kuriakose Mar Severios (Archbishop of the Knanaya Syrian Archdiocese), HG Mor Dr. Coorilose Geevarghese Metropolitan (Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church), Bishop George Eapen (St. Thomas Evangelical Fellowship of India), Rev. Fr. George Mathew (Vicar General of the Marthoma Church) and others spoke on the occasion.
Thiruvalla: The Holy Synod of the Believers Eastern Church, which convened at the church headquarters after the interment of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory, expressed their gratitude to the leaders of various churches, clergy, religious heads, governors, ministers, public representatives, prominent figures from the political and social spheres, friends, well-wishers, and the citizens of Thiruvalla, who participated in the wake and funeral rites of the late Metropolitan.
The Holy Synod also announced that the official memorial service for the reposed Metropolitan would be held on June 16, the 40th day that would complete the church’s mourning period.
The Holy Synod has decided to reconvene on June 17 to prayerfully elect the new Metropolitan of the church.
The Hon. A.N. Shamseer, Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, visited the resting place of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory at the St. Thomas Cathedral in the Church’s headquarters in Thiruvalla today, and paid his respects to the late hierarch. He also expressed his condolences at the Metropolitan’s repose to the Bishops and clergy of the church.
The Council of Bishops and the General Synod met today for deliberations about the future plans of the Church. The morning session was led by the Metropolitan Locum Tenens, HG Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa, who encouraged the leaders to practice gratefulness even in difficult circumstances so that they could ‘serve the Lord with gladness’ in accordance with the Psalmist. He then reminded them of the various spiritual lessons that Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory had always imparted to them, after which he asked everyone to continue doing what Christ wanted of them – to tend the sheep of the Holy Church.
In the second session, HG John Mor Irenaeus, the Archbishop of Delhi, explained about the provisions of the Church Constitution that were kept in place to lead the church in the days ahead.
In the third session, HG Joshua Mor Barnabas, Archbishop of Kolkata and Jorhat, announced the decision of the Holy Synod for the diocesan leadership to continue with the plans that Metropolitan Yohan had approved for the rest of the year.
In the final session, HG Daniel Mor Timotheos of North America and Europe closed with the lessons that Metropolitan Yohan had taught him and the other bishops, reminding the leaders that it was now upon them to take up his mantle and lead their flocks in obedience to Christ and His holy Church.
At 4 pm this evening, the Holy Synod called together a meeting of all the Bishops, Diocesan Vicars, Mission Province Vicars and leaders of various ministry departments of the church worldwide at the St. Thomas Cathedral in the global headquarters in Thiruvalla today. After leading the congregation in the Trisagion, the Metropolitan Locum Tenens HG Samuel Mor Theophilus addressed the gathering and thanked them for their help in the funeral rites of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan of blessed memory. After that, senior bishops led the service in the litanies of supplication, asking the Holy Spirit to lead the church in the days ahead. HG Daniel Mor Timotheos of North America and Europe delivered an encouraging homily, reminding the leaders of how important it was to take the vision of the late Metropolitan upon themselves and lead the faithful forward. The resident Bishop of the St. Thomas Community, HG Joshua Mor Barnabas then led the leaders in prayer, encouraging them to renew their commitment to serve the Lord and His Church. Finally, the Holy Synod announced the schedule for both the Council of Bishops and the General Assembly to gather for further meetings and deliberations over the next two days.
Update for May 19: After the mortal remains of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I arrived in the early morning hours of May 19 at the Cochin International airport, they were transferred to a hearse and accompanied by a 50-car escort to the Metropolitan’s village of Niranam, where the second service of the funeral rites was administered at the St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church there at 6:30 am IST by HG Mathews Mor Silvanus. Then these were taken to the KSRTC bus stand in Thiruvalla, where there was an opportunity for the members of the Citizens Forum and the public to bid him farewell. At 9:30 pm, the mortal remains were brought and kept at the Metropolitan’s official residence (Aramana) in the global headquarters of the Church in the St. Thomas Community, Thiruvalla, where the Council of Bishops offered prayers for his soul and administered the third service of the funeral rites. At 10:30 pm, the remains were brought and kept in the Synod Secretariat Chapel, where the clergy and faithful who had gathered from various dioceses kept watch over them the whole night through 9 a.m. the next day.
May 20: The mortal remains of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I were taken to the Believers Convention Center at 10 a.m. and kept for public viewing. Thousands of people from many walks of life and many countries came to pay tribute to the Metropolitan and bid him farewell. Bishops and clergy from various churches, political leaders, society leaders, teachers, schoolchildren, doctors, nurses, medical students and media personnel came and offered their condolences and paid their respects to his memory. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan, AICC General Secreatry KC Venugopal and CPM State Secretary MV Govindan paid homage to him. The fourth, fifth and sixth services of the funeral rites were administered after these. From 10 p.m., the clergy and faithful who had gathered from various dioceses kept watch over the reposed Metropolitan the whole night through 8 a.m. the next day.
May 21: At 9 a.m., the seventh service of the final rites was administered by HG John Mor Irenaeus at the Believers Convention Center, where the mortal remains of Athanasius Yohan Metropolitan were accorded full State honours. At 10 a.m., the mortal remains were taken to the St. Thomas Cathedral, where the final funeral service was officiated by Locum Tenens HG Samuel Mor Theophilus at 11 a.m. The mortal remains of Metropolitan Yohan were then buried in a newly dug grave at the side of the cathedral.
Nepal: Though the interment of Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I’s mortal remains is completed, the faithful and clergy of the parishes from all over the church worldwide continue to remember him as part of the 40 days of mourning announced by the Holy Synod. The parishes of the Diocese of Birtamod are shown here in various sanctuaries, observing memorial services in honor of the reposed Metropolitan.
Orissa: With hope in the risen Lord, the St. Paul’s Community of Brajrajnagar held memorial services in honor of our late spiritual father Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory. The services were in the Odia language, and the clergy and faithful spent time praying for the soul of the departed Metropolitan, asking the Lord God to grant His servant rest along with the saints. Rev. Fr. Sukanta Khosla reminded those that were gathered about the Metropolitan’s enduring legacy and the spiritual path he had carved for the church to follow. They also observed a period of silence to allow everyone to reflect personally on the Metropolitan’s influence in their lives and the community.

Update: The mortal remains of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I arrived early this morning at around 3:30 am in the Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery. A large delegation of bishops, clergy and lay faithful, under the leadership of HG Joshua Mor Barnabas (Resident Bishop of the St. Thomas Community), HG Mathews Mor Silvanus of Trivandrum, HG Titus Mor Osthathios of Kathmandu (Nepal), HG Daniel Mor Timotheos of North America and Eurupe, Secretary General Fr. Dr Daniel Johnson and Church Spokesman & PRO Fr. Sijo Pandapallil were there waiting to receive the remains which were then transferred with great care and reverence to a hearse.
The mortal remains of Metropolitan Yohan will leave Cochin with a 50-car escort at 12 pm and will make its journey to the St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church at the Metropolitan’s village of Niranam where the second service of the funeral rites will be administered at 4 pm.

Bangladesh: Many of our Clergy from all over the parishes of the Diocese of Khagrachari observed a memorial service this morning under the guidance of HG Justin Mor Thomas Episcopa, in honor of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory. Thiruvalla: The Council of Bishops, the Diocesan Vicars and Mission Province Vicars met at the St. Thomas Cathedral in the Church’s global headquarters in the St. Thomas Community in Kuttapuzha this morning, under the leadership of the Metropolitan locum tenens, HG Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa, to discuss the order of services related to the funeral rites of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory.
The meetings were also addressed by the Resident Bishop of the St. Thomas Community, HG Joshua Mor Barnabas Episcopa and HG John Mor Irenaeus Episcopa of the Delhi Archdiocese. It was announced that all the Episcopas and Diocesan Vicars would be serving in different roles in the remaining seven services related to the funeral rites of Metropolitan Yohan. All of these services would also be done in several languages – English, Malayalam, Hindi, Nepali, etc. – to reflect the multi-linguistic and diverse ethnic nature of the Church worldwide.
Nepal: Today marks the ninth day of mourning declared for the church worldwide since the repose of our beloved spiritual Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory. As in all of our parishes, memorial services are being conducted for the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory as part of the 40-day mourning period declared by the Holy Synod.
The members of our Women’s Fellowship from different parishes of Jhapa District (Birtamod Diocese) gathered in the St. Paul’s Cathedral in Birtamod to remember our late spiritual father the beloved Metropolitan Yohan. They also paid their respects to him by kindling the lamp in front of the Metropolitan’s portrait and offered prayers for his soul.

The Thiruvalla Citizens Forum (Pourasamithi) met in the Church’s headquarters in the St. Thomas Community yesterday to discuss and prepare for the funeral arrangements for the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory. The Forum decided that the mortal remains of Metropolitan Yohan would be received between 9-10 am at the corner of the K.S.R.T.C. In the orthodox Christian tradition, the funeral service usually consists of several rites. Accordingly, the first rite for the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I took place this morning at the St. Peter’s Believers Eastern Church Cathedral in Wills Point, Texas.

Our Metropolitan greatly revered the Syrian Orthodox Church and her traditions, recognizing that she had faithfully preserved the faith of the Holy Church throughout the centuries. The interim Episcopal Council had a virtual gathering of all the Bishops, Diocesan Vicars, Provincial Vicars and leaders of different ministries of the Church at 7 pm this evening. The meeting was presided by the administrator of the Council, HG Samuel Mor Theophilus Episcopa, who informed the gathering of the following:
◘HG Geevarghese Mor Makarios of Colombo and Kigali is deputed to travel to the US on behalf of the Council of Bishops and to help with the memorial services that would be held for the reposed Metropolitan’s soul in Dallas, Texas.
◘The mortal remains of the reposed Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory is expected to be brought to India from the US by May 20, 2024, and would be kept for public viewing at the Believers Convention Center located at the Church’s global headquarters in Thiruvalla, Kerala.
◘The funeral rites of the reposed Metropolitan would be held on May 21, 2024, at the St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church Cathedral, located in the global headquarters of the Church in Thiruvalla, Kerala.
◘The entire funeral rites and services would be telecast live over the news channels and the internet.
◘Beginning from today, all the dioceses and parishes of the Church worldwide are to observe a 40-day mourning period. During the Divine Liturgies held during this period, all celebrants are to include Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I’s name as the first among the departed souls to be remembered in the diptychs.
During the meeting, both the Secretary General Fr. Dr. Daniel Johnson and HG Daniel Mor Timotheos of North America & Europe addressed the gathering and explained the circumstances related to the recent accident and repose of Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan. Mor Timotheos Episcopa then reminded everyone of how the Metropolitan had always advised him and other bishops that they had to be strong even in times of difficulty and sorrow, for the sake of shepherding the faithful of the church.
HG Samuel Mor Theophilus then ended the meeting by thanking Mor Timotheos Episcopa and the parish members of the St. Peter’s Cathedral in Dallas, Texas, for taking care of Metropolitan Yohan during his final earthly moments. He also thanked HG Joshua Mor Barnabas, Fr. Sijo Pandapallil and the priests and members of the St. Thomas Community and the Synod Secretariat at the Church’s global headquarters for making the arrangements for the Metropolitan’s memorial services over the last two days. He then reminded the leadership of the Church that the Sovereign Lord was in control and would continue to lead the Church in the days ahead. He ended the meeting by requesting continued prayers for Metropolitan Yohan’s soul and for the funeral arrangements, that the church would be able to give the beloved Metropolitan a befitting farewell.

Dr. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan of the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church, who was a close friend of our beloved Metropolitan Athanasius Yohan I of blessed memory, along with the Very Rev. George Zechariah, another friend of our Metropolitan, and other priests of the Marthoma Church offered prayers for the departed soul of Metropolitan Yohan at the Synod Secretariat chapel in the Church’s global headquarters in Thiruvalla, Kerala. His Eminence also offered his condolences to our Bishops and the faithful and promised to keep them in his prayers.
The bishops and faithful of Believers Eastern Church were graced by the visit of HG Alexios Mar Eusebius Metropolitan of the Calcutta Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The Holy Synod of the Believers Eastern Church gathered at the Church’s headquarters in Thiruvalla, Kerala, this evening, to decide the next steps necessary to lead the church in the vacuum left by the repose of Moran Mor Athanasius I Metropolitan. Few of the Synod members from other countries, including HG Daniel Mor Timotheos, attended the meeting virtually. After offering prayers for the Metropolitan’s soul, the Synod decided to form a nine-member interim Episcopal council led by senior bishop HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus to manage the administration of the church until the election of the next Metropolitan.
The Synod also decided that the funeral service of Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan would be held in the St. Thomas Believers Eastern Church Cathedral, located in the Church’s global headquarters in Thiruvalla, Kerala, and would be officiated by HG Dr. Samuel Mor Theophilus in the presence of all the bishops of the Believers Eastern Church, after which His Holiness would be laid to rest in the courtyard of the Cathedral.
There is no official confirmation yet on the date of the funeral. It is estimated that it will take 8-10 days to complete all the procedures and requirements in the US before the Metropolitan’s mortal remains can be brought to India.

Believers Eastern Church offices, schools, and other institutions across the dioceses will remain closed on Thursday as a mark of respect to Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan, who reposed in the Lord on Wednesday.
Episcopas, priests, leaders of the church’s various departments and institutions, and heads of other churches gathered at the Synod Secretariat to offer special prayers for the departed soul of Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan.
His Holiness Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan reposed in the Lord this evening, the 8th of May 2024.
He passed away due to sudden cardiac arrest in a hospital in Dallas, Texas where he had been receiving treatment since his accident.
Further details will be announced soon by the Holy Synod.
