On 8 Septmeber 2021, on the occasion of International Literacy Day, the Women’s Fellowship teams in Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Imphal inaugurated new adult literacy centers at three different villages with the aim of equipping illiterate women with literacy skills.
The Women’s Fellowship teams also took initiative to teach the basics of reading and writing to the women who were interested in learning how to read and write.
Sanahal, one of the women who newly enrolled in a literacy class said, “I am truly happy to learn how to read and write. When we were young, no one gave any importance to girls’ education. Though we were so much interested to acquire an education, we were made to work in paddy fields and our plea to study was often unheard. But, today after many years, I have the opportunity to learn and I want to thank you for your willingness to teach us.”
“When we were young there was no one to teach us how to read and write. I am happy that today even at this old age I am given the opportunity to learn. Knowing how to read and write is important as we do not have to trouble anyone to read and write for us. I am thankful to you for your willingness to help me”, said another woman by name Sanajaobi.
Adult literacy classes are just one of the ways that Believers Eastern Church is empowering women in rural areas.
