On 8th September 2011, a World Literacy Day program was conducted by a Believers Church Women’s Fellowship team in Gulbarga district of northern Karnataka. Martha leads the team, which consists of six other women.
On the occasion of World Literacy Day, 60 people gathered at the community hall and had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of literacy. The womens team invited Rev. Fr. Prakash, Pastor Prabhakar and the honored guest, Ms. Sarubai (Gram Panchayat President). Ms. Sarubai gave a brief speech about the importance of literacy and said, “We adult women should come forward to learn since we know only how to thumb [give a thumbprint] and don’t know what is written on paper. In order to have adequate knowledge, we should give our time to learn.”
Ms. Sarubai appreciated Believers Church and its women’s team for helping adults to learn and equip themselves. “It is the first time a World Literacy Day program has been observed in our village, and I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Believers Church Women’s Fellowship team and the leaders for their work in the village,” she added.
Eventually, Martha, team leader, extended thanks to all the spectators, and the function ended with a prayer by Rev. Fr. Prakash.
This World Literacy Day celebration appeared in the Kannada newspapers, Vijay Karnataka and Praja Vani.
A similar program was held in Bidar district of Karnataka. The function was conducted by Rev. Fr. Abraham, and the guests for the day were Mr. Devindra (Gram Panchayat member) and Mr. Sanjukumar (advocate).
