The Hope for Children center in the Itahari Diocese of Nepal recently conducted a successful awareness program titled Plastic Waste Sanitation Management Campaign in Ward No. 3 of the Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City, West Sirijonga.
The program was graced by the presence of local leaders, including Mrs. Meena Rasaili, Ward Women Representative; Mr. Man Bahadur Rai, Tole President; and Mrs. Diki Maya Magar, Family Forum President, along with active participation from community members.
The campaign highlighted the harmful effects of plastic waste, emphasizing that plastic, being a non-degradable substance, takes decades to decompose. This leads to decreased soil fertility, hampers vegetation growth, negatively impacts the climate, and poses severe health risks to humans, animals, and plants. Participants were informed about how improperly discarded plastic emits toxic gases, causing illnesses, skin issues, and respiratory problems.
To combat these issues, the Hope for Children center encouraged the community to dispose of plastic waste responsibly by using dustbins and avoiding the indiscriminate use of plastic wherever possible. Practical steps were discussed to protect the environment, ensure healthier vegetation, and improve overall community well-being.
As part of the initiative, two dustbins were distributed to the Tole President to support proper waste management in the area.
During the event, Tole President Mr. Man Bahadur Rai and Ward Women Representative Mrs. Meena Rasaili expressed their gratitude to Hope for Children for taking this commendable initiative. They appreciated the center’s efforts in setting an example for the community and promised to use the resources responsibly to maintain cleanliness and environmental safety.
