On the occasion of Global Hand Washing Day, 15th October 2010, Believers Church Niranam Diocese conducted a special awareness program for the mentally handicapped people living in Asha Bhavan. The home is run by St. Mary’s Convent in Nellad, Kerala and falls under the leadership of the Orthodox Kalanad Diocese.
Rev. Fr. Libish (Believers Church Minor Seminary Principal) started the program, giving a brief explanation about the importance of hand washing. Minor Seminary students then performed action songs for the enjoyment of the 47 mentally handicapped adults and children.
The patients enjoyed this and applauded the students’ performance. Later, they eagerly watched a video which demonstrated the need for hygiene and showed the proper technique for washing hands.
The leader of Asha Bhavan expressed her heartfelt thanks to Believers Church for conducting the awareness program. Raising hygiene awareness is indeed vital for the health of the handicapped residents.
The simple act of hand washing will protect the patients, making them less susceptible to disease. Believers Church as a whole is concerned for society’s needy people. Social awareness programs are one among many ways the church is reaching out in South Asia to improve the lives of the underprivileged.
