Believers Church Gorakhpur Diocese launched a new initiative to help widows on 23rd June 2013 (International Widows Day). Rev. Fr. Abhishek started the event by speaking about the importance of caring for widows, who face many challenges in their daily lives.
Several church leaders and Sisters of Compassion lit a traditional lamp to inaugurate the project. The diocese then distributed rice and wheat flour to widows attending the program. Additionally, 25 BioSand water filters were given freely to the community.
“I have lived long years of my life,” said a 70-year-old widow named Seeta, “but have never seen such a group of people sharing the love of God and distributing rice and wheat flour to us. I am happy and will be praying that God would bless all of you…”
Four Sisters of Compassion are pioneering the work in the area, which is home to more than 1,200 widows. Seeing the vast need, the diocese hopes to increase this team to 50 sisters in the future.
The situation of widows in these villages is pathetic,” said Rev. Fr. Abhishek, “and they have hardly anything to live on. Personally I was deeply sad to see their condition, however was blessed to be able to help them.”
This is just one example of how Believers Church cares for the downtrodden and neglected.
