A football tournament was recently organized at Sambalpur, under the Jaigaon Diocese, in honor and memory of Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan of blessed memory. The event saw enthusiastic participation from eight teams representing the Dioceses of Kokrajhar, Siliguri, and Jaigaon, along with five local parish teams.
The tournament drew a large crowd, with approximately 1,000 spectators coming together to witness the spirited competition. The Panchayat Pradhan graced the event with their presence, alongside the Vicar Generals from the three dioceses. Before the matches commenced, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the reposed Metropolitan, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
All participating teams displayed exceptional sportsmanship, playing in a friendly yet disciplined manner. The final match, a thrilling contest between Kokrajhar Diocese and Siliguri, concluded with Kokrajhar Diocese emerging victorious, lifting the winner’s trophy.
In addition to the main honors, individual awards were also presented. The Best Player of the Series, Best Goalkeeper, and Best Man of the Match were recognized for their outstanding performances.
This memorable event not only celebrated the legacy of Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan of blessed memory but also brought together the local community in a spirit of unity and fellowship.
