Since 5 July 2021, Hope for Children team in Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Kolkata has been organizing food distributions to help covid-hit families in Dumdum area, Kolkata, in coordination with International Human Rights Organization and Zomato.
Through this distribution they are able to help around 350 people stave off hunger and starvation everyday.
Subal, now in his fifties, is rarely able to earn more than ₹30 a day. Living alone in a small shack beside a railway line in North Dumdum, Kolkata, he makes his ends meet through the amount he gets by renting out parking space, a small space in front of his house, for bike owners. As his house is located just opposite a metro station, 2 to 3 bikes are parked each day and he gets just ₹15 per bike.
He was working in a factory, but his life took a turn for the worse when he was hit by a running train just near his home. Though he survived the accident, his right hand was fractured, making him unable to work.
The staff of Hope for Children met him during one of the food distributions and now he waits for the food every day to have his lunch.
Like Subal many are being helped by the daily food distributions at Dumdum.
