Severe monsoon rains hit Sri Lanka in May 2010, leaving much devastation. In June, a Believers Church Colombo Diocese relief team went to the village of Pubudugama, Gampaha district, which was badly affected by the flooding.
Most of the people here are poor and depend on manual labor or agriculture for their livelihood. Almost 1,500 families in this area suffered because of the flood. Initially, they all had to leave their houses and stay in temporary shelters.
Believers Church provided desperate families shelters with dry rations. Later as the people were able to return to their homes, a medical clinic was organized for them under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Johnson, Director of Believers Church’s Medical Department.
The team also worked with local government officials to identify families badly affected by the flood so aid could be provided.
These families, who had lost so much, received free kitchen utensils through Believers Church. One woman, Krishna, carried her new utensils across the muddy ground to her one-room home. At least a foot of water covered the inside of her house. However, all she could think of was cooking something for her child with the new utensils.
In the midst of such devastation, Believers Church Colombo Diocese is bringing hope wherever possible. Through food distribution, medical assistance and more, flooded communities are slowly being restored.
