In an effort to offer warmth and protect the poor from the effects of biting cold, Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Kathmandu organized a blanket distribution among the displaced people in Sarlahi district of Nepal.
These people were once the inhabitants of Makwanpur district, but during the flood in the year 1993, they were evacuated from this district and were placed in an uncultivated land in Sarlahi district by the Nepal government. It’s been around 19 years since they have been living in this area. They are known as ‘Sukumbasi’ (means landless) people as they have not yet been provided with any registered land by the government. Around 700 such families are residing in this village.
Since the onset of winter, many of these families have been adversely affected as they have no warm clothes to fight off frigid temperatures. So, the main purpose of the distribution program held on 28 December 2022 was to help those who cannot afford to buy warm clothes and sleep in a warm bed.
Mr. Ram Sundar Mahato, ward member, who gave a short speech at the distribution program, expressed his appreciation to the church for the kind act. “The work you do is not an ordinary work. People who are kind-hearted and have a helping nature only can do this type of work”, he said.
Altogether, 78 families received thick and warm fiber blankets on this day. All of the recipients expressed their heartfelt thanks to the church for the timely gift.
Sanu Kanchha Praja, one of the recipients, said, “You have made my heart happy by giving this warm blanket in this winter season and fulfilling my indispensable need. I am grateful to you and will forever be indebted to you.”
