The Diocese of Lucknow constructed yet another new house for a widow hailing from a small village in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh. The diocesan secretary and the ward member, Mr. Sukhdev Kashyap handed over the key of the newly-constructed home to the widowed mother this month.
Sukhdei, 65 years old, lost her husband some 15 years ago. Her daughter and four sons are already married and settled elsewhere. Ever since her children moved out of the home, she had been staying alone in a small hut made up of wood and hay. She lived from hand to mouth, surviving on government rations and widow’s pension.
To top it all off, in the month of July 2021, her house got damaged by heavy rains, leaving her ultimately homeless. With nowhere else to go, she put up a small makeshift shed by the roadside, near a burial ground and took shelter in that little hut.
Seeing her plight, the church constructed a new home for her, thus providing her shelter, safety and hope. A beautiful place she could call home.
