To commemorate World Day Against Child Labor, Believers Church Diocese of Kolkata took out awareness rallies in different places of the diocese on 12th June 2016.
Bishop Dr. Juria Bardhan, Bishop of Diocese of Kolkata officially flagged off the mass awareness rally. Women’s Fellowship teams, Sisters of Compassion teams, Bridge of Hope staff and children, Sunday School children, clergymen, staff and their families took part in the rallies to show their support for the noble cause.
The rallies passed through various streets, shouting slogans and holding placards which read “Stop forced child labor”, “Join hands to stop child trafficking”, “Child labor is a crime”, “School is the best place to work”, “Say no to Child labor and yes to education” etc. Over 1,500 people participated in the rallies calling upon the general public to actively support the fight against child labor.
Besides, the church provided notebooks and pens to around 200 marginalized children in two places. These children hail from poor and broken families and some of them are child laborers too. The church has been helping them by giving them free tuition.
On the same day, Bridge of Hope carried out awareness rallies in 31 places to mark the occasion. Bridge of Hope staff and thousands of Bridge of Hope children and their parents took to the streets to highlight issues surrounding child labor. The Bridge of Hope children from vulnerable areas like leprosy colonies, red-light areas, widow’s colonies and slum areas also participated in the noble cause to build public awareness on child labor.
