Believers Church Diocese of Kolkata organized a second gift distribution program on July 2, 2016 in continuation of International Widows Day celebration where 50 helpless widows were gifted with goats.
These widows have been completely dependent on others to make a living. They have lost their husbands years ago and accepted poverty as their unavoidable fate. Some of them are unable to work because of old age, but have adopted begging as a means of survival.
Seeing their pitiable condition, the diocese decided to give them income-generating tools to help them climb out of poverty. The distribution was held in a village. The chief guests for the program were Mr. Mohamed Ishmael (District Food Superintendent), Mr. Souvik Bhatacharya (District Trinamool Youth Congress Vice President), Mr. Sanjit Baunsphore (Vice Village Head), and Mrs. Samuli Chakraborty (Village Committee Member).
While addressing the gathering, the chief guests lauded the philanthropic works of Believers Church. The guests then handed over the goats to the poor widows.
Roopa Mandi, a 65 year old widow who is affected by leprosy was excited to receive a goat. She has no one in the family and is helpless. She said “I will raise this goat and take care of it well. This gift means a lot to me.”
