Believers Church Diocese of Jorhat observed International Literacy Day in a tea estate on 7th September 2014. Two hundred fifty women who are working in the tea estate attended the program.
These women didn’t know how to read or write because they were not allowed to have higher studies. Education was not at all important for them and were treated only for doing kitchen work. So women’s Fellowship members took initiative to educate and empower the women there.
Bishop B Sunderraj was the chief guest of the program and he spoke about the importance of education in one’s life. He encouraged them to learn how to read and write and also ensured the help of church in improving their quality of life.
Fifty women among them started learning how to read and write that day. During the program, women’s fellowship members distributed 50 literacy books and also 25 multi-vitamin tablets to physically challenged women. “Thank you so much for teaching us the importance of education,” said Maya Tanti, one of the participant. “Now, I’ll surely send my daughter to school.”
Believers Church aims to empower members of developing communities through the literacy and social awareness programs.
