Believers Church Diocese of Hyderabad organized a gift distribution program on July 5, 2016. The program was held in a slum area, and income-generating gifts were distributed to needy widows in commemoration of International Widows Day which is celebrated on June 23 each year.
Around 150 people took part in the event. During the program, the church gifted wet grinders to 10 widows, pushcarts to 5 widows and sewing machines to 10 widows. Altogether 25 widows received the poverty alleviating gifts that day.
The widows were touched by the kind gesture of the church. They thanked the church for taking the initiative to help them.
Varikolu Bhagya was one of the widows who received a pushcart on the occasion. She is 46 years old and a daily wage laborer. Her husband passed away when their children were very small, and to take care of their needs she started to work as daily laborer. However, since last two years she has not been able to go for work regularly due to illness. She constantly worried about the future of her children. She knew she would not get an easy job because she was illiterate. When she received the pushcart she said, “I will use this push cart to sell vegetables and fruits. I’m sure from now on I will be able to earn a steady income and provide good education to my children and meet our daily needs. I am so thankful to Believers Church for this generous gift”.
