Diocese of Dhemaji Extends Help to Flood Affected Families

In an effort to render a helping hand to the flood victims in Assam, Believers Church Diocese of Dhemaji held flood relief distribution programs on 27th and 28th July 2016.

On 27th July 2016, volunteers of the church visited six relief camps and distributed 1,000 blankets, 300 kg beaten rice, 600 biscuit packets, 30 kg brown sugar, 300 bathing soaps, 300 toothpastes, 300 toothbrushes and 300 hair oil bottles. Again on 28th July 2016, the diocese organized a flood relief distribution program in an island, which is home to 700 families.

The island is surrounded by two rivers: the Brahmaputra River and the Siang River. The recent incessant rains resulted in flooding of these rivers and all the 12 villages scattered across this island are submerged under the flood waters. Over 300 families lost their homes to the floods and now they are homeless and staying in relief camps. Many others have lost their crops and livestock like cows, pigs, goats and hen.

The church took initiative to help these families and provided them with 600 blankets and food items with the collaboration of Dhemaji District Administration. Mr. Victor Carpenter (Deputy Commissioner), Mr. Dhormeswar Mili (Additional Deputy Commissioner), Mr. Payeng (Block Development Officer) and several other dignitaries were present at the relief supply distribution program. Apart from providing relief materials, Bishop B. Sunderraj, Bishop of Diocese of Dhemaji and volunteers of the church also visited the flood affected families and comforted them.

Since the location is an island, there are no proper transportation facilities to reach this area and the only means to reach this island is by boat. Beating all odds, Believers Church swung into action to reach out to the suffering families.

Impressed by the humanitarian work of the church, the area Panchayat president said, “Believers Church is the first organization which had come to our place and helped the affected families in this area. We will never forget your good work. On behalf of of everyone I would like to thank you for lending a helping hand to our people”.
