On 26th October 2017, Believers Church Diocese of Colombo held a disaster supply distribution program in a remote village in Galle District.
This village located in the foothills of a natural forest reserve was severely affected by this year’s floods and landslides and the residents of this village and nearby areas are still trying to recover from the damage caused by the natural disaster. As this is a flood-prone area which faces flooding year after year, the church distributed evacuation tools which will help the villagers in future should an emergency situation come.
Mr. Nagaratna (Chief of Police of local police station), Mrs. Ariyalatha (local govt. representative), Mr. Kumara Wickramananda (Village Mediation & Welfare Committee President) were present on the occasion and handed out the items to people. The disaster supplies distributed included 3 wheelbarrows, 3 iron rods for digging, 8 spades, 1 high pressure water gun, 1 large LED floodlight and 8 sand carriers. First aid boxes for ten pre-schools and cassette recorders for seven government schools also were distributed on the occasion.
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Ariyalatha (the local govt. representative) said, “We thank you for coming and sharing your love and gifts with us. When disaster stuck us, you came to our rescue and helped us with immediate needs and now you have come again to assist us in rebuilding our lives. We appreciate this thoughtful gesture”.
