The Dhemaji Diocese BioSand water filter team organized a filter distribution program on 8th June 2012 in Gugamukh Nahorbari, Lakhimpur district of Assam.
There are around 100 houses in this village populated by the Mising tribe. The people’s water comes from a tube well, and the water is not clean. The water contains arsenic and also has a bad smell, but the people still used the water directly without filtering it, even for drinking purposes.
The villagers had been using this unhygienic water for more than 15 years, unaware of the health issues this could cause. Moreover, most of them could not afford to buy a filter.
Pinku, a Minor Seminary student, comes from this village. He knew the need for water filters in his village, and shared the matter with the BioSand water filter leader, Pastor Ranjan.
After hearing this, Pastor Ranjan took initiative and arranged a program to distribute 30 BioSand water filters to the needy people of this village. Rev. Fr. Gena (Dhemaji Vicar General) took the privilege of attending the program and encouraged the people to live a safe and healthy life.
During the program, there was a demonstration showing the difference between a glass of unfiltered water and a glass of filtered water.
Villager Ganeswar Medok said, “I was very shocked by the difference seen in the water after filtering. My family used the water that was not filtered, and I feel sad even by seeing the difference in the glasses. If we can differentiate the filtered water by sight, surely our health will be better by using this filter.”
The people considered themselves blessed to receive the water filters.
