On the occasion of Global Hand Washing Day, 15th October 2010, Believers Church Delhi Diocese conducted awareness programs in Haryana, Uttarakhand and Delhi. The objectives of this initiative were to promote community-wide sanitation, raise awareness of the benefits of washing hands with soap and support a global and local culture of good hygiene.
In Haryana, a Believers Church team organized two programs. The first event was at a government school where 25 students and teachers learned the benefits of hand washing. The team distributed soap free of cost so the participants could put what they learned into daily practice.
In the evening, the team went to a slum called Anaj Mandi. Rev. Fr. Kurian partnered with the team and gave a speech about the importance of hand washing. The Believers Church staff offered a practical demonstrations during the hand washing event. They distributed 75 bars of soap to children and other community members.
In Uttarakhand, the Believers Church state office worked together with a local church in Saharanpur district to teach the community about health and hygiene. They raised awareness about the importance of hand washing through a video as well as a live demonstration by a local worker.
In Delhi, a Global Hand Washing Day program was held in Nathupura. Seventy-five people gathered for this program. Believers Church worker Vishal taught proper hand washing techniques, which reinforced the film which was shown.
Pastor Bimlesh gave a short speech about prevention being better than a cure. He also said, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity.”
Believers Church places a high priority on improving the health of the underprivileged. In many parts of South Asia, trained Believers Church workers work diligently to raise health awareness and prevent disease among underprivileged communities.
