Believers Church Colombo Diocese held a Dengue Fever Control Program on 10th February 2013 in an area that has recorded a high rate of dengue infections and deaths.
Villagers gathered to learn how to avoid the disease and protect their lives. Health officers, the village head and police officers all took part in the program.
A health officer explained to community members that they should keep the village clean to prevent dengue-infected mosquitoes from breeding. “We should reduce the breeding sites such as flower pots, fish tanks, tires, coconut shells, tins, water collecting plants and gutters, which can collect water.” He also spoke of the importance of good sewage management and using mosquito nets.
Finally, the health officers visited the surrounding area to examine whether it is kept clean and to check for dengue mosquitoes.
“It is good to have programs like this,” said a grateful villager, “because our community will be educated to take care of their lives.”
Believers Church works to educate communities on a number of different health issues.
