Believers Church Delhi Diocese observed Independence Day with a flag hoisting and social work program in 2009. Minor Seminary students and staff and Women’s Fellowship members remembered those who laid down their lives to free the nation.
After the national flag was raised, a community cleaning program began. Six teams set out from the Minor Seminary to a nearby village. They started cleaning a bus stop that was nearly covered with weeds and wild grass. Trash was scattered on the roadside. Some team members scattered bleach powder along the wayside and in ditches to kill harmful germs. They also pulled weeds and cleaned common public meeting places.
The goal of cleaning was to communicate the importance of cleanliness to villagers and stop pollution and other disease-spreading hazards. Many curious onlookers were surprised to learn that the seminary was doing this for the community at no cost.
Later, the Women’s Fellowship team distributed clean drinking water for free at a poor settlement in a different village. A whole water tanker was used. Along with pure water, the team gave people tips on how to maintain health and hygiene.
Believers Church took the chance to build communities all over the nation on Independence Day.
