On 2nd October 2012, Believers Church Patna Diocese organized a celebration at a district jail for the 143rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Around 1,000 inmates, police officers and jail staff members participated in the Gandhi Jayanti event. Jail Superintendent Mr. Abinash Kumar was one of the prominent individuals in attendance.
The purpose of the program was to challenge the participants to live in peace with others. Rt.Rev. M.A. Lalachan was the chief guest.
The Bishop shared about Gandhi’s contribution of bringing peace and spreading a lifestyle of non-violence to the nation.
Further, he said Gandhi’s ideas on non-violence have captivated the world and become a symbol of peace. Bishop Lalachan challenged the inmates that peace comes from a person’s inner life and relationship with God. In addition, he said “Freedom, tranquility, harmony and peace comes from the Lord.”
Believers Church presented the jail library with 42 books written by Metropolitan Dr. K.P. Yohannan. The titles focus on practical ways to deal with life problems.
The jail authorities and prisoners were highly impressed with the program as a whole. The program concluded with prayer and blessings from Bishop Lalachan. The event was covered by the Hindustan Hindi newspaper.
