On August 15, 2024, Believers Eastern Church dioceses across India joined the nation in celebrating the 78th Independence Day with enthusiasm and a deep sense of national pride. The celebrations began with flag-hoisting ceremonies and the singing of the national anthem in each diocese. While remembering the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the gift of freedom they secured, special prayers were also offered for God’s continued blessings upon the nation.
At the St. Thomas Community, H.H. Moran Mor Samuel Theophilus Metropolitan hoisted the national flag and delivered a stirring Independence Day address, reflecting on the country’s journey and the responsibilities of its citizens. H.G. Joshua Mor Barnabas Episcopa led the community in a heartfelt prayer for the nation, invoking God’s blessings for peace, prosperity, and harmony. The event was a beautiful reminder of our shared duty to uphold the values that define our great country.
As part of the celebrations, dioceses and local parishes actively participated in ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ (cleanliness drives). Many dioceses also took the opportunity to promote environmental awareness by organizing tree-plantation drives, planting saplings at various locations to encourage conservation efforts.
To share the joy of the occasion, sweets and fruits were distributed, and several dioceses organized food distribution and community service activities aimed at uplifting local communities. These acts of compassion reflect the Church’s ongoing commitment to serving society and honoring the values that strengthen the nation.
In addition, St. Johannes Schools and Hope for Children organized various programs to mark the day, further enriching the celebrations.
Here are a few glimpses into the celebrations.
