Believers Eastern Church Dioceses Bring Help and Hope to People Living With Leprosy on World Leprosy Day

In connection with World Leprosy Day, which is held each year to promote global awareness of the dreaded ancient disease- leprosy, Believers Eastern Church organized several programs across the nation to bring help and hope to people affected by leprosy.

India accounts for nearly 60% the new leprosy cases detected in the world. Though leprosy can be prevented, treated and cured and not highly contagious, there is a strong stigma attached to this disease and the victims are forced to endure a lifetime of isolation and suffering.

On 28th January 2018, World Leprosy Day, Believers Eastern Church held many awareness programs to educate people about the disease and its prevention. The church also organized special events at dozens of leper colonies which saw hundreds of leprosy patients receive fresh meals, fruits, medicines, blankets, woolen shawls, hygiene kits, clothing, sandals, umbrellas, notebooks and school supplies for their children.

Food Distribution

On the occasion, Believers Eastern Church Jammu and Kashmir and Diocese of Raipur took initiative to distribute fresh meals to 280 people, including children, at two leper colonies. Dioceses of Hubli, Gulbarga and Vijayawada distributed fruits and food items to people living with leprosy.

Free Medicines and Wound Dressing

While Believers Eastern Church Jammu and Diocese of Gulbarga distributed medicines, teams in Dioceses of Hubli and Vijayawada dressed the wounds of leprosy patients and provided them with medication.

Custom-Made Shoes

Diocese of Udaipur distributed custom shoes to more than 50 leprosy patients, in recognition of the day.

Blankets and hygiene items

Diocese of Delhi distributed blankets, hygiene and food items to 40 people at a leper colony, where plans are underway to open a clinic for colony residents.

Since 2007, Believers Eastern Church has been working among those affected by leprosy, offering medical care and reaching out to them with love and compassion. Presently, we are working in 44 leprosy colonies across Asia where specially-trained women are serving them around the clock.
