On 7th March 2012 Believers Church Patna organized a special program to launch the Sisters of Compassion ministry among the slum dwellers of Digha Ghat and Sheikhpura. The event was held at Rajkiya Higher Secondary School in Shastri Nagar and 500 slum dwellers attended.
The Sisters of Compassion ministry was inaugurated by special guest, Smt. Poonam Devi (MLA) and Bishop M.A. Lalachan. In her address, Smt. Poonam Devi expressed high appreciation for the church’s initiative and said, “The heartbeat of the church is similar to our government’s concern for the welfare of the people in the state.”
Dr. Alok Mishra (orthopedic surgeon and professor at Patna Medical College and Hospital) shared health and hygiene tips with the crowd. Later, food packets and vitamin A tablets were distributed to all. It was a time of celebration for everyone who attended.
A lame man said, “This is the first time I experienced the love of people in my life and understood that there are people who love the poor and needy.”
This new branch of the Sisters of Compassion will benefit 885 slum dwellers in Digha Ghat and Sheikhpura. Most of the people living in these slums are daily laborers. They are deprived of basic needs and their children are vulnerable to malnutrition.
The Sisters of Compassion will benefit the children and families by daily raising awareness about morals and health and hygiene. The sisters will also help the people meet their basic needs.
