In an initiative to feed the hungry during the Covid-19 lockdown, a local parish in Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Siliguri carried out a free meal distribution in a small village in Alipurduar District, West Bengal.
Most of the families in the village live under the poverty line and depend on farming or daily labor to make a living. During this pandemic-induced lockdown, they are left with no jobs and are struggling to provide for their families. Seeing their plight, the local parish decided to help them with cooked meals.
On 26 June 2021, the parish priest along with few church believers distributed food packets among the poor families. Gathering all the people at one spot for distribution was not possible owing to the lockdown, therefore they went from house to house and handed out the food packets to the needy families.
They distributed a total of 80 food packets that day. The poor families expressed their gratitude to the priest and his team for their generous hearts.
