On 19 April 2021, at around 6pm, a sudden fire broke out in a small village in Surkhet District, Nepal. The fire destroyed houses, especially those with thatched roofs, and stables. The villagers escaped the fire unhurt except for an old woman who suffered severe burn injuries.
The whole village came together to extinguish the fire and through their efforts they could save two oxen that were seriously injured and save three houses. However, four families from this village lost everything in the fire.
Believers Eastern Church parish located near this village swung into action as soon as the news of the fire accident reached them. On 20 April 2021, the local priest and parishioners visited this village with relief materials and distributed dry ration items such as rice, dal, oil, salt, sugar and essential items such as pressure cooker, jug, wok, water can and carpet, to affected families.
Mr. Upendra Thapa, Mayor, Mr. Mukti Puri, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Pushpa Gharti, Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly were present during the distribution. They expressed their appreciation towards the church for taking the initiative and providing for the immediate needs of the families affected by the fire outbreak.
