Relentless rains that lashed several parts of Telangana last week had left a trail of destruction inundating several villages and forcing people to vacate their houses. At least 40 villages under Khammam district came under the flood waters. Surrounded by water on all sides, many residents had to seek higher ground for safety. The heavy rains and floods left many families in need of shelter, food, water and medicine.
On seeing the plight of the flood victims, the priest and members of a parish in this district, took it upon themselves to help the flood-hit families in whatever way possible. On 19 July 2022, they visited two of the flood-affected villages namely Velerupadu and Bhudevipadu which are situated 20 miles away from the parish and there they provided rice, fresh vegetables and fruits to 100 worst-hit families.
Besides, they continued to stand by the survivors of these devastating rains and floods offering them ongoing support as they recover and rebuild their lives. The parish is still finding ways to provide any assistance and help more people in their darkest hour.
Boyaju, 45 years old, said, “I witnessed this kind of flood after many years. So many people, including me, became homeless and were on the brink on starvation. During this difficult time, the church helped us with ration items and vegetables. We are so grateful to you for this kind help”.
Baburao, 30 years old, said, “Our homes and roads were submerged by flood waters and we could not go out to buy any food items. At the right time, the church provided us ration items and vegetables with which we can survive for next one week. We thank the generous support of the church”.
