The ongoing pandemic in Nepal has pushed more families into poverty and the daily wage earners are among the worst hit in the second wave of COVID-19.
To help impoverished families in dire need, a local parish in Believers Eastern Church Diocese of Birtamod held a dry ration distribution in Jhapa District, Nepal on 13 June 2021.
The distribution was done in collaboration with the local municipality committee and altogether, 50 families were helped with dry rations. Each family received a kit consisting 10 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1 kg salt, and a half litre oil.
Mr. Naresh Sanjel, the city in-charge (Maoist-Center) and the local committee members were also involved in the distribution of the ration items.
The beneficiaries were daily wage laborers, widows, the physically challenged, and elderly persons. They thanked the church and the municipality committee for reaching out to them with essential food supplies.
According to UNICEF, the number of Nepali children living in poverty rose from an estimated 1.3 million before the pandemic to about 7 million in August last year. “Many of these children are suffering from multiple deprivations including a lack of access to nutritious food and to an education,” it said. While the nation is undergoing this crisis, Believers Eastern Church diocese in Nepal are doing whatever is possible to bring relief and hope to people in need.
