On the occasion of International Widows Day, 23rd June 2016, Believers Church Diocese of Nagpur held a gift distribution program in which sarees, handcarts and goats were distributed to widows living in extreme poverty.
Around 400 people attended the program and most of them were women. The chief guests for this event were Mr. Naresh Babu Pugliya (X-MP), Mr. Ram Teke (Deputy Collector) and Mr. Vinod Babu Dattatre (Congress MLA). They appreciated the church for working for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden.
During the program, the church distributed 350 sarees, 15 handcarts and 6 goats to the widows in need. The widows were very happy to receive the gifts. Some of them didn’t have a steady source of income and lived from hand to mouth, so getting a hand cart or a goat will help them climb out of poverty and make them economically independent.
Radha Omprakash Bawariya, a 35-year-old widow, said, “I am from a very poor family. I have two children. My husband was severely addicted to alcohol and he didn’t take care of our family. I was working as a servant in others house to meet my family’s basic needs. Because of overuse of alcohol, my husband’s liver was affected and eventually he passed away. After his death, often I fell sick. I couldn’t go for work daily and it affected my income. But now I am very happy that I received a hand cart today and with the help of this hand cart I will start a small shop and take care of my children.”
