In an effort to help improve the quality of life of widows and empower them with new livelihood, Believers Church Diocese of Agartala organized a gift distribution program on June 29, 2016 where tin sheets and income-generating gifts were gifted to widows hailing from six districts of Tripura. The program was held in commemoration of this year’s International Widows Day.
Mr. Radha Charan Debbarma (Chief Executive Member of Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council) and Bishop Anil Kumar Debbarma were the chief guests for the event. While addressing the gathering he said, “Believers Church is doing many good works; as a result the society is improving”. He also appreciated the church for striving for the welfare of the poor and needy.
During the gift distribution ceremony, the widows received either a pair of piglets or a pair of goats, or tin sheets (3.5 sheets), relevant to their individual needs. 158 goats, 222 piglets and hundreds of tin sheets were distributed and altogether 253 widows were helped that day.
Agropmonti Molsom, a 40-year-old widowed mother of six children, was one of the recipients of the gift. She is poor and has no one to help her. She does jhum cultivation and takes care of the family single-handedly. When she received a pair of piglets from the church she said, “I am very happy for the gift I received today. I couldn’t even afford to think of buying a single piglet, but today I received two piglets free of cost and I am very much thankful to you”.
