Hope for Children Center at Balkhu recently organized a free medical camp to serve the underprivileged residents of Balkhu Slum, situated along the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The initiative aimed to provide essential healthcare services, including checkups for eye, ear, nose, throat, and dental issues. In addition to diagnosing ailments, the camp sought to raise awareness about preventive healthcare, identify critical cases requiring further treatment, and promote hygiene and healthy living habits.
A team of seven doctors from BP Eye Foundation and Cheers Hospital volunteered their time and expertise to serve 200 underserved children, youth, and elderly residents of the slum community. The medical professionals conducted comprehensive screenings, including vision tests, cataract detection, infection treatments, hearing assessments, throat and sinus infection diagnoses, cavity detection, gum disease treatments, and oral hygiene education. Health counseling on nutrition and hygiene was also provided to empower individuals with knowledge for better well-being.
The event was met with heartfelt appreciation from the beneficiaries, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the free medical services.
Tuhina Khatun, a 40-year-old resident, shared, “We usually have to pay for medical check-ups elsewhere, but thanks to the Hope for Children project, we received these essential services for free. This initiative is extremely important and helpful for our community. Thank you!”
Similarly, 62-year-old Ram Bahadur, who had long suffered from hearing difficulties but lacked the means for treatment, said, “Today, I received a free check-up and medicine. I am grateful for this opportunity.”
The successful medical camp brought much-needed relief to the Balkhu Slum community, reaffirming Hope for Children Center’s commitment to serving those in need through acts of compassion and care.
